The culture of the Philippines has been greatly influenced by the migrants that have come to this island nation throughout time. Filipino music and art have both been influenced by the cultures that have migrated to this nation. The first type of music that developed in the Philippines was indigenous music brought here by native tribes that migrated from Taiwan. There are three basic groups of indigenous music styles: southern styles, northern styles and other styles. The southern style of music usually involves five different instruments including the kulintang, the agung, the gangdinagan, the dabakan and the babedil. The northern styles of indigenous music reflect Asian gong music. Their music usually features the unbossed gong called the Gangsa. In addition to the instruments used by southern and northern music styles, other instruments used in the Philippines include log drums, flutes, bamboo zithers and the Kudyapi.

I took my bike during 2007 Rainbow Festival in Malmö, Sweden, to go to an evening of queer poetry with Jan Hammarlund. Jan is the first openly gay artist who was played in Swedish radio in the 70s, that way he himself is a part of our LGBT heritage. The program read: 2000 years of queer poetry round the Mediterranean sea. Sappho, Catullus, Kavafi. In some way I could feel it was interconnected with my own recital, performed the day before - Music from the closet.

Pakistan has inherited many things from the colonial rule when it became the sovereign state on 14th August 1947 as there was no source of developed knowledge and information other than what the rulers have adopted for themselves.

The Britons took control of a state which was very much a monarchist, but when they left, it had to adopt the all famous democratic system of politics, the throne where once the emperors used to sit, fastened the governor general and prime ministers for times to come. The army, social institutions, music, sports, couture, cuisine, architecture and administration, or in other words, all walks of life had absorbed and were displaying a prolific plethora of post colonial western influence as it was considered the best and the most appropriate one owing to its association with the ruling and powerful class.

Art As A Mirror Onto The Soul

I was having an interesting conversation with a friend this week about how abstract art can be interpreted many different ways, depending on the viewer. And in a clumsy attempt to figure it all out, that got me thinking about mirrors…

Mirrors are fantastic things. Love ‘em! The one problem is they only reflect the mere surface of the objects you place before them. Buff and polish all you like, they won’t delve any deeper.

For that, we need something more incisive. Yes, X-rays will get you some of the way, but they’re really quite dangerous if used more than a couple of times a year. I can only hope Superman didn’t stare at Lois Lane too often.
