Teaching nature photography has taught me a lot about the combination of art and technology required. Good photography takes just the right mix of camera skill, creativity, and hard work.

Half my time spent teaching is concentrated on the essential mechanics of good photography; aperture, shutter speed, ISO, lenses and so on. The rest of the time is focused on understanding natural light, and the techniques of good composition.

Digital cameras offer so many functions and features, photography can seem way too complex for the beginner. In frustration many new photographers simply switch their digital camera to auto, and never learn how to use it properly.

Nature photography has been popular since the birth of photography. In recent years it has found a new respect as an art form. 20 years ago, nature photography had been relegated to mass-market postcards and calendars of dubious quality. It certainly was not often found framed on a gallery wall.
